BetterBiddeford in collaboration with community partners is launching an after school teen civic engagement initiative called Teens For Change. This club will be teen-led and focus on empowering youth to use their voices and take action on issues that matter to them. It’s a great opportunity for students to engage in discussions about the topics they care about, learn new skills such as public speaking, organizing, and grant writing, while working to shape their community into one they feel helps them to thrive. Both Biddeford High School and Thornton Academy students are invited to participate.
MYL (Maine Youth Leadership), HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership), and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) are organizations that sponsor a weekend-long leadership seminar in early summer for sophomore students. Representatives from the sophomore class are selected to attend each seminar. These are excellent opportunities for students to meet other sophomores from across the state and participate in discussions, group activities, and presentations from community leaders. The goal of these seminars is to enhance and strengthen leadership skills. Students who have gone in the past have raved about their experiences, and many return as alumni every year to volunteer at the seminars!
Students can pick up an application from the School Counseling Office. The deadline for returning applications is January 24th.
Please feel free to contact Mrs. Martin if you have any questions.
Applications for the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology (BRCOT) will open on February 1st. Students can apply on the BRCOT website.
If a student is interested in visiting BRCOT, they should fill out the following form and speak with their school counselor to get a permission slip BRCOT Visit Form
We’re excited to offer students in grades 10, 11, and 12 the opportunity to take the ASVAB test at Thornton Academy on February 26th at 9:00 AM.
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a comprehensive assessment that measures your aptitude and acquired skills. It provides valuable insights into your strengths and can help guide your academic and career planning after high school.
If you have any questions about the benefits of taking the ASVAB, please reach out to your School Counselor for more information.
Seating for this exam is limited, please email Ms. Logan at jennifer.logan@thorntonacademy.org to reserve your spot.
Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey ~ February 5th
Thornton Academy Upper School will participate in the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS) on Wednesday, February 5 during advisory. The MIYHS is sponsored by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Department of Education and is administered to help measure the percentage of youth in Maine who practice healthy and risky behaviors. The information will be used to create school health programs across the state to help reduce risky behaviors and increase healthy behaviors.
The survey asks about the health behaviors of students including nutrition, physical activity, injuries, tobacco, alcohol & other drug use, as well as sexual behaviors that could lead to pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and suicide, depression, and gambling. The survey has been designed to protect all students' privacy. Students will NOT put their names on the survey and no student will ever be mentioned in the reporting of results.
Parents of TA students (grades 9-12) were provided information about the survey administration earlier this month. This is a voluntary survey. If a student opts out of participating, they will still be required to attend advisory and an alternative activity will be provided by the advisor.
We will use an adjusted bell schedule (pictured right) to accommodate survey administration time. We ask all students to please be on time for advisory, so there is time for all students to complete the survey. If you have any questions about the survey, please see Ms. Logan in the Main Office.
