MY LEFT-HANDED BLACK CAT

BY

ATENE KAWASAKI

Haiku About My Friend After the Death of My Wife

Mr. Kawasaki is a journalist. He works for the Nagasaki Daily, an influential local newspaper in Nagasaki Prefecture. He is a member of its Editorial Team and also a renowned writer at the Culture Department of the paper. He has recently encountered the saddest thing in his life. His beloved wife has passed away. Left behind only with Noah, the black cat who has strayed mysteriously into his life and become his bosom friend, Mr. Kawasaki has been filling the void created by the bereavement with his haiku poems about the cat and many photographs of him. The result has recently been published in a charming anthology with the above title.

(The following are some examples of Mr. Kawasaki’s haiku on his cat-friend Noah.)
