James Hackett Birthday Tribute Haiga, August 2009

World Haiku Review, Volume 7, Issue 2, August 2009

James W. Hackett has turned 80 on August 6.

He is a pioneer of haiku in the West, a real haiku legend, with almost 60 years of writing haiku. Anyone who has some interest in haiku in general, knows his name. He and his wife Patricia have become very dear friends of mine through many years of our correspondence and sharing the love of haiku. I translated many of his haiku, longer poems & articles, and posted about him and his work several times in my Live Journal, and now, along with my haiku friends, made a book of haiga with James' haiku, for his jubilee.

Each of the haiga artists (who are the best in the world, in my opinion) chose one haiku, and created a haiga which I compiled in a book, and presented it to Mr. Hackett at his birthday party in Haiku, Hawaii. James was very moved and touched, and asked me to pass on his gratitude to all the artists-haijin. There are 22 haiga in the book titled "Haiga Offering for James Hackett: Tribute to the great haijin".
