JOHNSON LAKE — Johnson Lake will have its third waste water cell in service by spring.

With the two existing cells reaching capacity, construction of the third cell was approved Tuesday by the trustees of the Johnson Lake Sanitary Improvement District.

The cell will cover 14 acres and be located south of the two cells built in 2008 and 2009.

Space for a fourth cell was acquired when the system was constructed and will be ready when needed.

“You’re on the schedule we projected when the system was built,” engineer Jim Olmsted of Olmsted and Perry in Omaha told the trustees.

The engineering study for the system had projected growth in population and use of the system at 5 percent to 9 percent per year.

Construction will begin in August, and the project is projected to be completed in October.

Olmsted estimated the cost will be about $725,000. The trustees have obtained agreement for a loan of $675,000, repayable at an interest rate of 3 percent over 15 years.

Based on current property valuations from Gosper and Dawson counties, users of the sewage system will pay $41 per year per $100,000 valuation.

The third cell is needed because of increased use of the system.

“Thirty-six new houses have been built since 2008. More people with property at the lake want to live here year-round, and many of the homes and cabins have been added on to,” District Clerk Larry Ossenkop said. “There are more bathrooms, showers and dishwashers than there were in 2008.”
