JOHNSON LAKE – Johnson Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host a boating safety course Sunday, May 23 according to instructor Howard Hanson.

Hanson said the Nebraska Boating Safety course is required of all power boat operators under the age of 18, which includes operators of personal water craft and all other motor boats. The minmum age to operate a motor boat in Nebraska is 14.

The six-hour class covers everything from equipment requirement to safe boat operation and accident prevention, and is a great course for both new and experienced boaters.

Boat owners who complete the class may also qualify for insurance discounts.

Parents are encouraged to attend with their children and boaters of all ages are welcomed to attended.

The six-hour class is from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the EMS Building at Johnson Lake. There is a $10 fee for the class, and students must attend the complete course. Preregistration is encouraged.

Each student needs to bring snack, drink and a No. 2 pencil. All other material will be furnished.

There will be a special presentation on the mechanics and safe operation of personal water craft by Dave Younker of Captain’s Quarters.

To receive certification, each student must successfully pass a written exam.

The class will be held in the EMS Building at Johnson Lake. Students who will be 14 by the end of this calendar year may register for the class, but will not be eligible to drive a boat until they turn 14.

To register for the class, contact instructor Hanson at 308-325-5087 for an application or via email at hvhanson@msn.com.
