JOHNSON LAKE — Johnson Lake Development Inc. directors accepted a bid from Dan’s Sanitation of Lexington Tuesday for 2012 services.

The $25,990 bid was more than $3,000 less than the other bid received from Schaben Sanitation of North Platte.

Schaben has provided sanitation services from May through September for several years. Permanent lake residents pay for their own service the rest of the year.

JLDI President Joann Wieland said the off-season monthly charge for year-round residents will be $14.84 for services provided by Dan’s Sanitation. She said Schaben officials have told her their monthly charge will be $18.20 starting on Oct. 1.

Lake residents have the option of continuing service with Schaben or making an immediate change to Dan’s Sanitation.

Lake owner Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District pays for trash collection services.

Also Tuesday, Norman Hoveling, a former board member, announced that carp removal will be done the first two weeks of June, and $5,000 have been donated over time from the public for that project.

In other JLDI business, the directors:

** Heard from Chuck Olsen about the Chapel of the Lake hike and bike trail. Lexington Foundation has offered to provide a matching grant of up to $50,000 for contributions and pledges to help finance the trail.

**Give Big Lexington,” the event where contributions toward matching the grant can be made, is scheduled for Nov. 17.

For contributions that exceed $50,000, 23.5 percent have been earmarked for the next phase of the lake’s hike and bike trail up to $25,000. The remainder will be dedicated to other charities that benefit from the foundation.

** Changed the date for the 2012 fireworks display to June 30 instead of July 4.

** Re-elected all officers for another year. The new budget adopted includes a $100 raise for the position of president.

** Approved bylaws changes to permit a quorum when board members from 11 neighborhood areas are in attendance and allow JLDI directors to select the specific date each June for the annual meeting.

** A question of consuming alcohol on the lake’s waters was raised at last month’s meeting. By statute, the consumption of alcohol while on the waters of the lake is up to the lake’s owner. Alcohol consumption is not permitted on Johnson Lake.

The question became an issue after the state game commission authorized the consumption of alcohol in certain state parks, including Johnson Lake.
