They Came

We asked them to come. We begged them to help. We broke barriers, shattered ancient prohibitions so they could lend their aid. Did we know what might happen? Were we too short-sighted? Was the remedy worse than the ailment?

We knew there would be risk. We didn't know the risk would be so much.

Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it…

I was Eldrin Dragonfriend, a title I loathe. They gave me that name, but I curse them for it. They came for the adventure. They came to escape. They came to crush the devils. They came to establish an empire. But most of all they came to end our way of life. I hide from my kind now. Dragons are the only ones who do not wish me dead, so I stay with them. I hear rumors of them breeding with humans. And I see these strange new creatures in the empire. These dragonborn. Oh, they have honor. It's hard not to see how they have taken the best of humankind and dragonkind. But there are so many of them. And they will not give up the land they have taken. The cities they have conquered. They are here to "save us". Pah. They are here to rule us.

I am filled with regret. Did we really have to go to Draconia? Was there no other way?

Flames, ice, acid and other horrors surged from their multitude and rained upon us and our lands. Our village was destroyed in seconds; we fled before them. I looked back and saw them land where we once lived, prowling in the ruins, looking satisfied...
