how do i earn these awesome points?
I'm so glad you asked! Here's the different activities you can choose from. Many of them can be done more than once. Email your responses to hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us. Be sure to put "Band Away From Band" in the subject.
NEW AS OF TUESDAY, March 24:
- 10 points, for PERCUSSIONISTS ONLY: Send a video of you playing a 5-stroke roll. Be sure to check out this web page and listen to the examples first:
https://vicfirth.zildjian.com/education/07-five-stroke-roll.html
NEW AS OF FRIDAY, March 20:
NEW AS OF THURSDAY, March 19:
- 5 points - HAVE A WRITTEN DAILY SCHEDULE! Send a pic of your daily schedule. It could be for the whole day, or it could be just for "school time," whichever works better for your family. Obviously, I expect to see "practice" or "play instrument" or something like that.
NEW AS OF WEDNESDAY, March 18:
- 10 points - Send a video of you playing a major scale. Max 2 scales per day, at least one octave per scale. This is all or nothing, so it must be perfect - no stops or hesitations, no squeaks, and be sure to tongue up/slur down. Yes, you must include the arpeggio! I have to be able to SEE YOU and your fingers in the video. Email the video me, and be sure to tell me what scale you're playing.
- 3 points - Suggest music we can play in the stands next year. It only counts if I can buy the music, so go to J.W.Pepper's pop music for marching band page and listen to some of tunes they have listed there. There's hundreds of tunes to choose from! Send me your top 5, and I'll give you 3 points each! Bonus points if your tunes are voted on -- stay tuned for that!
- 2-5 points - Take a video of you playing ANYTHING on your instrument for 3-5 seconds. Better sound/better playing = more points! Email the video to me, OR earn a bonus point by posting it to IG using the hashtag #bandawayfromband.

- 5 points - Watch an online concert, and tell me about it! Send me an email that tells me
- what you watched
- how/where you watched it (YouTube, Amazon Prime, etc.)
- what instruments were in the group
- what you liked the least about the performance
- what you liked the most about the performance
- Bonus points if you're willing to talk about the performance during one of our online band classes
Here are some places you can find online performances:

- 3 points - Write a letter to a current 7th grade or 8th grade band member encouraging them to do marching band. Write it on paper, then take a pic and email it to me. If you want to do this, let me know and I'll assign someone to you.
- 1-3 points - Send a funny band meme. Limit one per day. More points for better memes. Bonus points possible for original (created by you) memes. Bonus point if you post it to IG with the hashtag #bandawayfromband.
- 3-5 points - Make a tik tok or snapchat with your instrument. It must include you actually PLAYING your instrument.
- 3-5 points: Write a thank-you note to the adult(s) in charge of your life for all the late nights and early mornings during marching season.
Be sure to check back on this page; more points will be added as we go!
Everyone should be practicing about 20 minutes a day, 4 or 5 days a week. Here's what you can work on:
- Long tones #1 OR #2
- Flexibility (pick one)
- Scale exercise (I'm working on some new ones - check Classroom)
- Work on something. Pick a favorite song and see if you can figure it out by ear. Find a solo online and learn it. Play your favorite parts of halftime shows of the past. Play along with one of your favorite songs. Work on concert music (check Classroom - it's coming!)
