This month I used a free site to create a Boggle board that incorporated the vowel diagraphs ew and oo that were part of our unit 5 lesson in word study. The students had to find as many 3 or more letter words that they could find using the letters given to them on the Boggle board. Words are worth 1 point each except for those words that have either of the diagraphs ew or oo. They are worth 2 points.
Students worked in partnerships which were randomly generated and they had 12 minutes to find as many words as they could. The time could be adjusted up or down to fit into any schedule.
BOGGLE TIME
VOWEL DIAGRAPHS
EW and OO
While the students were working I walked around the room and assisted any partnerships that were unsure of whether a word was a word or not according to the English dictionary.
When time was up I collected the papers and tallied the scores. I announced the top five partnerships and their scores the next day during our morning meeting.
Overall, Boggle was a success. Not only did the students really like it, but it is easy to create to go along with each unit in our word study program. I have done it twice since introducing it and the students can’t get enough of it. Whether the spelling patterns they are practicing transfer into their writing is yet to be determined. If not, it does offer more practice with particular spelling patterns and the students really have fun with it. I plan to make it part of my weekly word study routine. I will incorporate it on Fridays after the post test is taken. It will be a fun way to wrap up each unit and provide a bit of fun along with the learning.
