We are planning how to incorporate studio play into our publishing opportunities for our Unit 2 Argument Writing Unit. Traditionally, all students would type up a speech and record it with we video. However, given Yvonne's studio play idea, we think this would benefit many students in our classes who struggle to elaborate or get their thoughts down onto paper. This would open up doors for students to use learning about claim, reasons, and evidence in a wide variety of ways.
We hope that this will truly become a "Changing the World" unit, because we are removing the barrier created for some students that struggle with writing several paragraphs.
We are looking forward to see the level of engagement given this opportunity. We are just launching this unit so it will be several weeks before we can implement.
We also started planning how we can incorporate play into our ICT classroom for our second science unit (which is also upcoming in the future.) See link below.
The third grade team was eager to get our students into studios so we came up with a choice board as a follow up activity to our class trip to the Hebrew Home in Riverdale.
Below you will see the joy on the face of one student when the idea of studios was being explained. They hit the ground running and some chose to create posters or graphic novels.
Peer Response: Hi Jamie,
It's great to hear that you and your team are incorporating studio play into the Unit 2 Argument Writing Unit to create a more inclusive and engaging experience for your students, especially those who struggle with traditional writing tasks. The graphic novel idea was original and powerful! The student photos help to tell the story. Also, the variety of studios, like those detailed in your Science Unit PDF, seems like a fantastic way to allow students to express their understanding of complex concepts creatively.
How do you plan to assess the different types of projects students choose to create?
