Assignment 1: October 8, 2024 - Pose a Problem of Practice:
My goal is to incorporate teacher language as defined by Responsive Classroom which is reinforcing, reminding, and redirecting into my everyday teaching. Teacher language refers to the professional use of words, phrases, tone, and pace to enable students to engage in active, interesting learning, contribute to a positive learning community; and develop positive behaviors. Incorporating this language into my everyday teaching will help me support student growth, reinforce student efforts, and redirect students when they go off track. By intentionally incorporating these types of language into your daily routine, you create a classroom environment that supports positive behavior, self-reflection, and student growth. Through this engagement, I will expand my repertoire of tools and resources to use with my students.
I plan to read The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton, which focuses on the impactful use of teacher language. This book offers practical guidance, real-life stories, and examples demonstrating how carefully chosen words and tone can address challenging classroom situations. I aim to use this resource to refine my communication with students, particularly encouraging their growth and independence as readers. By applying the strategies in the book, I aim to foster a supportive learning environment where my language helps students take ownership of their learning journey.
I will summarize and reflect upon each chapter. In addition, I will record the techniques and language incorporated into my lessons and reflect on what I think went well or needs more work.Â
