As we were headed into the last bend of our argument writing unit, Jaime and I decided to brainstorm some studios that would enhance our student's arguments and highlight the work that they have done. We were excited to introduce new studios and were happy to see that most students chose a new studio to work in. We had many students join our 3D modeling studio and a few who were excited to make flyers and write a play. Jaime and I worked as guides to support our students within these studios and created opportunities for teacher feedback and peer feedback.
We created models for a few of the studios which helped students to imagine the products that they could create, and helped them to choose the studio that will be the best fit for them. Jaime created the 3D model and did a video, and I made a sample flyer.
To highlight these studios Jaime and I decided to transform the bulletin board in the hallway and give each student their own working studio space. We have their planning sheet and their published argument writing piece in their studio, in addition to a picture of each student and a name tag that they designed. As students finish the work in their studios we will remove their planning page and put their finished product next to their typed speech. Student focus and motivation has increased because they know that their hard work will be displayed outside in the hallway.
Students were provided with checklists to make sure that their writing had all of the necessary components of an argument writing speech.
When Jaime and I taught our model lesson we used these 2 resources to support students when they were giving peer feedback. These helped students to know how to give feedback and take part in reciprocal conversation.
