Learning from each other!
After our last CRG class visit with Celeste Aberman, Kristen and I were inspired to have our students do some work with poetry and choice. We loved the way Celeste effortlessly had her students observe and draw conclusions from Grant Snider's book, "Poetry Comics." Her students were able to observe that the poet used panels in different shapes and sizes and the impact it had on them as readers.
We showed our class how we used Grant Snider's comics to help inspire our writing. "If I Were a Tree" was a mentor for "If I Were a Cloud." It was such a fun experience!
Our senior options student, Amelia, crafted a poem inspired by Grant Snider as well. She was able to use his theme of nature as well as his graphic style to publish her poem.
Here are some student samples. The one on the left was done on a graphic style page that we created for students to choose from. The one on the right was created afterwards and with this poem, our student created his own panels to match the fluidity of water in a pool!
Jaime! I am always so impressed with how you seamlessly intergrate new ideas into your classroom. The way you have embraced play this year is truly amazing. Every time I walk into your room, the exctiement is in the air. I love the mentor you created! Love always! -Amy
Jaime- I love how we can see Brian holding a page from Grant Snyder's book and then how he used it as inspiration in his poems! It has been such a joy to see how engaged the students are in this work and the choice that they are being provided.
Seeing this collaboration documented is just the best! Good ideas from good ideas!! Poetry is a beautiful way to allow students to use their voice. The Poetry comics, and the idea of generating poems from images and sketches before bringing words in increases access for all students. When you allow for multimodal learning, bridging meaning to print, you are providing your students with a foundation for strong creative writing to emerge. Great work, as always! Michelle O'Donnell
