Assignment 1: October 8, 2024 - Pose a Problem of Practice:
I will use the CORE Phonics Survey and UFLI Encoding assessments as screening tools to assess whether a student requires instruction in specific phonics concepts.
Using the results from these assessments will allow me to create targeted, small-group instruction to address specific gaps in phonics knowledge. Weekly monitoring through the UFLI assessment, along with periodic progress checks using the CORE Phonics Survey, will enable me to adjust instruction based on students' evolving needs.
I will use UFLI lessons, LLI books and lessons, and decodable texts to provide targeted instruction and support for students. These resources will help reinforce phonics concepts and build foundational reading skills. Decodable texts will allow students to apply their phonics skills in reading, ensuring they build confidence and fluency as they progress through phonics concepts. UFLI lessons will provide structured, explicit phonics instruction, while LLI books and lessons will support fluency and comprehension.
Hi Kim,
Your plan of combining UFLI lessons, LLI books, and decodable texts will give your students a well-rounded foundation in both phonics and fluency. I am wondering if at some point in your study you might ask, "How can I balance explicit phonics instruction with opportunities for students to engage with more complex texts as they progress through their foundational reading skills?" - Sue Luft
HI Kim. Utilizing the UFLI assessments and the Core Phonics Survey to track your students' phonics progress is incredibly beneficial. These tools provide comprehensive information and enable you to create a clear teaching plan to support your students in becoming more proficient readers. Additionally, the Roll and Read games offer an enjoyable way to reinforce phonics skills in the classroom and can be sent home for families to practice with their children. So happy you are a part of our reading team! Collette
