In the last 2 months we have been working on using Academic Choice in a number of different ways across subjects. We have also been working on our reflections and how to make them more meaningful. This has been really great for the kids throughout our study of the American Revolution.
For this culminating project in 4th Grade at Heathcote we have been working on a project we call AmRev. This is a project that requires the students to use all that they know about reading historical fiction as well as non fiction texts, studying primary sources and making inferences, understanding maps. It includes both narrative NF writing and expository NF. Students are expected to create a narrative, turn it into a script for a presentation that they will present to families at the end of the year.Â
This year I decided to add much more choice into the project and worked closely with my grade level team and Chris Casal to do this. Students were given choice of topic, they created their own research questions and sub questions and decided how to research that topic. Next, they were able to choose the format in which they would present the information.
Here are some of the kids thoughts on the project and the academic choice involved.
