Bringing Phonics to Life Through Play
In my phonics instruction, I follow the UFLI Foundations program, which provides a structured approach to teaching both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) skills. To make learning more engaging and meaningful, I incorporate hands-on games that align with the UFLI scope and sequence. These interactive activities help lift student engagement and support stronger retention of phonics concepts. By turning skill practice into play, my students build confidence, develop fluency, and have fun while mastering essential reading and spelling strategies.
Read as You Go!
How to Play:
Take turns rolling a die and moving your piece that number of spaces.
Read every word you pass out loud.
When you land on a space, read that word again.
If you roll a 6, you lose your turn.
The first player to reach END wins the game!
Print one copy of the game board (page 2) for players to share.
Print the game cards, cut them out, and laminate for durability.
Each player gets 20 cards and places them face down in a pile.
Decide who goes first.
Player One flips over the top card, finds the number at the bottom, and places the card in that numbered space on the game board.
Read the new CVC word created aloud—even if it’s a silly word!
Player Two takes a turn doing the same.
Keep taking turns until both players have used all 20 cards.
Shuffle the cards and play again!
The CVC Flip It game can be adapted to incorporate additional phonics features for extended practice.
