We're excited to incorporate learning through play into our ELA curriculum with the book The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. This story offers valuable lessons on creativity, overcoming challenges, and the importance of perseverance.
Our plan is to read the book as a group and engage the class in a discussion about its themes and key takeaways. After the read-aloud, students will receive baggies of materials to create a structure inspired by a place they love to visit. Before they begin building, students will first sketch their structure and write about it in a plan. The next day, they will have time to build their creations. On the third day, they’ll reflect on their work by revising their drawings and writing to match what they actually built.
Throughout the process, we want to encourage conversations about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them, mirroring the character's journey in the story.
Katie- It's always so much fun collaborating with you! This is going to be a great lesson for the children.
