Playing with Math and Literacy
Students did a form of word search with numbers find all the pairs of ten with multiple color highlighters.
Here we are working on fine motors, the correct formation of numbers, and putting a clear quantity to the number we know. We did this with numbers 1-20.
We originally used these blocks to make clear addeneds. In this activity we used the facts we know to figure out unknown math problems and how to get to the closest ten to solve new math problems.
A Playful Wilson Reading System
For students who are still working on reading in phrases, I took each sentence out of the Wilson book and put them on a card breaking the phrases. Students fish for them (using paper clips and magnetic fishing rods) and then we act them out.
Students focus on one line at a time and try to increase their fluency and prosidity by doing a dry read and then reading in fun different voices.
Students practice reading sentences in phrases and increasing their fluency by reading each sentence 2-3 times. To make this a little more fun we use a 10 sided dice with a roll and read chart.
Although when I model I prefer to use a flower, hangman is a morbid classic thats an easy motivator.
Students use privacy boards and the specific word skill we are working on to sink each others ships!
Some students prefer to use multiple color dry erase markers to keep track of their hits and misses.

It's a deal! Which levels/skills are you working on? - Maddy
Maddy - I love all of your creativity and playfulness. You can see how much your students love it too by the smiles on all of their faces! Adding in more playfulness and fun into a small group reading lesson which can be challenging for those students is such a wonderful way to increase engagement and show how much you care too! - Lyndsay
Maddy - you are so creative! I love all of the ways you have incorporated fun into your lessons. I know Wilson can be very "dry" at times and the games you have implemented make it so much more appealing to the students. You are an inspiration! - Sarah
