The Pedagogy of Joy!!!
The Pedagogy of Joy!!!
This experience has been wonderful! From the first moment we spent with Yvonne, it felt like a natural fit for us to incorporate more choice and play in our classroom. Students deserve to be able to have a choice in how they showcase their learning. The smiles on our students faces said it all!
Kristen and I also realized that allowing for choice gave our students an opportunity to think more deeply about what they learned. We saw this with Emilie's and Nicolas' Hebrew Home interviews. We also saw this when our students used choice to symbolize the argument of their speech. Choice allows deeper interpretation. Students become the masters of their craft.
We also used choice to help our class process a significant loss. What we noticed about this experience is that our students chose the path that worked best for them to help grieve the loss of their classmate. As Kristen and I look over our pictures from this past year, we see a whole lot of joy and enthusiasm from our students and from us as well. This is what every classroom should offer their students to help bring learning to life.
Jamie, thank you for this beautiful reflection. The way you and Kristen have woven choice and play into your classroom—not only to deepen learning but to support your students through joy and grief—is incredibly powerful. As I sit here and read your posts and view your bulletin board display, I am moved beyond words. Your examples, from symbolic interpretations to processing loss, speak to the profound impact of giving students agency. This kind of work honors both the academic and human sides of learning, and it’s exactly the kind of classroom experience we hope to cultivate across Scarsdale. Thank you for your contribution to the CRG this year. It has been lovely having you as part of the group! -Michelle O'Donnell
