RWI Phonics lessons at home from Monday 23rd March

Read Write Inc. is scheduling free Phonics lessons on Facebook and YouTube for children to watch at home; three short Speed Sound lessons with one of their trainers every day for the next two weeks. Films will only be available at the times below, please note that the timings are GMT time (UK timings):

Nursery to start with Set 1 Speed Sounds, please don't move on to Set 2 Speed Sounds without liaising with your class teacher.


  • Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30 am and again at 12.30 pm

  • Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00 am and again at 1.00 pm

  • Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30 am and again at 1.30 pm

Teaching Set 1 Sounds - Template

Please refer to each days Phonics learning activity for the sound, phrase and Fred talk words

You will need:

  • Read Write Inc Set 1 sound cards (refer to the printable resources below)

  • Letter Sound writing sheets (refer to the printable resources below)

  • Other sensory resources to practice writing the letters such as shaving foam, sand in a baking tray, flour in a baking tray

Learning activity:

Say the Sound

  • Introduce the new sound by using the sound card. Help your child by saying the sound (not the alphabet name) if he or she is unsure of the sound. (Please follow the resource link below to print the cards)

  • Ask your child to repeat the sound

Read the Sound:

  • Write the sound on a board or paper. Run your finger round the shape of the letter, saying the sound

  • Ask your child to repeat

Review the Sounds:

  • Hide the new sound in the pack of sounds that you have printed from the link below. Ask your child to read the sounds and spot the new sound

  • Increase the speed as your child gain confidence

Write the Letter:

  • Pretend to write the letter d in the air with your finger, ask your child to copy

  • Say the phrase whilst writing the letter on the board

  • Ask your child to say the phrase as he or she writes the letter on paper

Fred Talk:

  • Say each word in the box below in Fred Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEzfpod5w_Q). Ask your child to repeat. (Pause to allow your child to ‘Jump-in’ and say the whole word – if he or she can). For each word, ask your child to repeat the Fred Talk and the whole word.

  • Use the Fred talk words given in the daily Phonics activity

Speed Write:

  • Ask your child to write the letter on the floor with his or her finger whilst repeating the writing phrase

Other ideas:

  • Pratice writing the letters using chalk outside

  • Practise writing the letters on a baking tray filled with sand, flour or even shaving foam

  • Use the large letters to trace the individual letters (printable resources)

  • Use the letter formation sheets to practise the letters

  • Name other objects that begins with todays sound
