Say the Sound

  • Use the sound cards to go over the sounds with your child. Help them by saying the sound (not the alphabet name) if they are unsure of the sound. (Please follow the resource link below to print the cards

  • Stretch mmmmmm as you press your lips together hard. Ask your child to repeat the sound.

Read the Sound:

  • Ask your child to write m on a board or paper. They can run their finger down and then over m, saying mmmmmm. Say m just as you reach the end of m. Ask your child to repeat.

Review the Sounds:

  • Hide the new sound in the pack of sounds that you have printed from the link below. Ask your child to read the sounds and spot the new sound (no bouncing or stretching). Increase the speed as children gain confidence.

Write the Letter:

  • Pretend to write the letter m in the air with your finger m, saying: Maisie, mountain, mountain. Ask children to copy. Repeat, writing m on a white board or on a piece of paper (hold it so that your child can see it). Ask your child to say the phrase as he or she writes m on paper sitting at a table.

  • Stretch m as you air-write m. Ask your child to copy. Repeat, writing m on the board. Ask your child to stretch the sound as he or she writes m on paper.
