Good morning Giraffe Class.

How are you feeling this morning. Did you have a nice breakfast and are you full of energy ready to start our day of learning?

Let’s start today……

  • What day is it today?

  • What is the name of today’s shape?

  • What colour is the numicon?

  • Can you show someone 7 fingers?

  • What number comes after 7?

  • What number comes before 7?

  • Can you draw today's shape in sand / flour?

Phonics - a

You will need:

  • Read Write Inc Set 1 sound cards (refer to the end of the planning for printable resources if needed)

  • Letter Sound writing sheets (refer to the end of the planning for printable resources if needed)

  • Other sensory resources to practice writing the letters such as shaving foam, sand in a baking tray, flour in a baking tray

Learning activity:

Say the Sound

  • Use the sound cards to go over the sounds with your child. Help them by saying the sound (not the alphabet name) if they are unsure of the sound. (Please follow the resource link below to print the cards

  • Bounce a-a-a-a. Open your mouth wide, as if to take a big bite of an apple. Ask your child to repeat the sound

  • Hold up the Picture Sound Card. Bounce the sound at the start as you say the name of each picture and ask the children to repeat: a-a-a-apple, a-a-a-ant, a-a-a-astronaut, a-a-a-acrobat

Read the Sound:

  • Ask your child to write a on a board or paper. They can run their finger down and then over a, saying a-a-a-a-a-a. Say a just as you reach the end of a. Ask your child to repeat

Review the Sounds:

  • Hide the new sound in the pack of sounds that you have printed from the link below. Ask the children to read the sounds and spot the new sound (no bouncing or stretching). Increase the speed as children gain confidence

Write the Letter:

  • Pretend to write the letter a in the air with your finger, saying: Round the apple, down the leaf. Ask your child to copy. Repeat, writing a on a board etc. Ask your child to say the phrase as he or she writes a on paper sitting at a table

  • Stretch a as you form the letter in the air (air-write). Ask your child to copy. Repeat, writing a on the board

  • Ask your child to stretch the sound as he or she writes a on paper

Fred Talk:

  • Say each word in the box below in Fred Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEzfpod5w_Q ). Ask your child to repeat. (Pause to allow your child to ‘Jump-in’ and say the whole word – if he or she can.) For each word, ask your child to repeat the Fred Talk and the whole word

  • m-a-n man

  • m-a-d mad

  • s-a-d sad

  • j-a-m jam

Speed Write:

  • Ask your child to write the letter on the floor with their finger whilst repeating the writing rhyme:

  • a - Round the apple down the leaf

You can repeat the activity by practising writing the letters on a baking tray filled with sand, flour or even shaving foam

Other ideas:

  • Use a sheet of paper and ask the children to write the letters while saying the writing rhyme

  • Use the large letters to trace the individual letters (printable resources)

  • Use the letter formation sheets to practise the letters

Math

Learning Objective:

To begin to learn some everyday language to talk about capacity.

You will need:

Selection of transparent bottles/cups/containers of various sizes.

Learning activity:

Help your child pour water/liquid into the containers. Experiment with different levels of water. Alternate the different levels of water in the containers. Help your child use some mathematical language ie. this bottle is full/half full/more than/less than. Look at counting: how many containers of liquid to fill the big container.

Other ideas:

Add food colouring to the water. What happens when I mix two colours together? Have fun with your child experimenting and predicting together.

I hope you had fun learning today!
