Good morning Giraffe Class

Can you believe that we have now completed five weeks of learning at home. I have been so impressed with the work you have been doing at home with your family. I have enjoyed watching videos and photos you have posted on our home learning pages and am so proud of all your hard work. Well done to you guys and a big thank you to mum and Dad for all their support and hard work, I know they have had so much fun spending this special time with you.

Let’s see what fun is in store for us today…...

Story of the week

The Little Red Hen

Today we are going to look at a Youtube video of the story, The Little Red Hen.

In a story, there are many different characters. When Ms Tone read the story yesterday the characters were the Little Red Hen, the Pig, the Cat and the Rat.

Are the characters in the Youtube video the same or are they different?

Fine Motor Skills - baking bread

If you prefer not to make the bread you can use the play dough recipe instead to make a pretend bread for the Little Red Hen.

Learning Objective:

To develop fine motor skills and finger strength

To observe how substances change when mixed together

You will need:

  • 300g all purpose flour

  • 200g whole meal flour

  • 7g sachet fast action dried yeast

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp clear honey

What to do:

  • Tip the flour, yeast and salt into a large bowl and mix together with your hands. Stir 300ml hand-hot water with the oil and honey, then stir into the dry ingredients to make a soft dough.

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 mins, until the dough no longer feels sticky, sprinkling with a little more flour if you need it.

  • Oil a 900g loaf tin and put the dough in the tin, pressing it in evenly. Put in a large plastic food bag and leave to rise for 1 hr, until the dough has risen to fill the tin and it no longer springs back when you press it with your finger.

  • Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Make several slashes across the top of the loaf with a sharp knife, then bake for 30-35 mins until the loaf is risen and golden. Tip it out onto a cooling rack and tap the base of the bread to check it is cooked. It should sound hollow. Leave to cool.

Other ideas:

  • Talk about the different techniques such as a weigh, knead, pour, mix, spread, cut

  • Add raisins, grated cheese, sliced banana, oats, dates etc to your bread

some extra fun ;-)

Story-go-round

A collaborative story creation experience.......

Make up a cooperative story by letting each person add one sentence. Start with characters and a simple plot, like “a dog and cat went to the beach”, and let your child take it from there. The sillier, the better!

Can you make up a story about giraffes?
