IB Math A&I HL/SL

Welcome to IB Math Applications and Interpretations (A&I)! I, Mrs. DeFilippo, am excited to introduce myself as this year’s IB Math teacher. I look forward to working with you and your child as your son/daughter begins the rigorous IB program.

The IB Diploma Program (DP) is a rigorous, academically challenging and balanced program of education designed to prepare students aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The DP aims to encourage students to be knowledgeable, inquiring, caring and compassionate, and to develop intercultural understanding, open-mindedness and the attitudes necessary to respect and evaluate a range of viewpoints.

This course recognizes the increasing role that mathematics and technology play in a diverse range of fields in a data-rich world. As such, it emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context by focusing on topics that are often used as applications or in mathematical modelling. To give this understanding a firm base, this course also includes topics that are traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course such as calculus and statistics. The course makes extensive use of technology to allow students to explore and construct mathematical models and develops mathematical thinking, often in the context of a practical problem and using technology to justify conjectures. Students have the option to take this course at the Standard Level (SL) or the Higher Level (HL). Students will make their choice at the beginning or year 2. In addition to learning the IB Math curriculum, this course will prepare students to pass the Algebra 2 Regents in June 2021.

It is very important that your child attends class daily, comes prepared and is on time. Students who are not in class are responsible to make up the topics they missed, and this can be very difficult if they are not present for lessons and activities. Please utilize pupilpath.com to stay updated on your student’s progress.

Students are expected to come to class prepared to do well. Part of being prepared is to have pencils and an IB Math only notebook (preferably with graph paper) ready for use every day. Being prepared also means that your student comes to class well rested, knowledgeable about the material learned on the previous day and with homework completed. Organized notebooks will ensure that your child has the materials needed to study the content covered in class daily.

All lessons for the entire school year will be posted on this website whether you are learning in-person or remotely. Students will have the opportunity to complete all lessons and assignments digitally or on paper. Digital assignments should be completed on Google classroom or turned in on paper in class.

Homework is given EVERY NIGHT! Studies have shown that Mathematics homework has a deep impact on student performance. Students who do not complete the homework on time are missing a valuable part of the learning experience. 5 points will be given to an assignment completed on time. Assignments turned in one day late will be given half credit. Assignments turned in more than 1 day late will be given zero points.

A tentative outline of this year’s topics and sequence is provided below. More specific information, including the standards covered through each unit, is available electronically. Please contact me with any questions.

A student’s final grade for the semester is an average of their 3 marking period grades.

1. Arrive to class on time and prepared

2. Electronics should only be used to complete class activities

3. All students learning in person must wear masks and food or drink of any kind is not allowed

4. Restroom visits should be limited except in case of emergency.

5. Students should always remain on task.

6. Always be respectful to your teacher and peers.

7. Please try and show your face during remote instruction and mute your mics when you aren’t speaking

8. Students participating in remote learning must take assessments following the same conduct as students in person and must not receive unauthorized assistance of any kind.
