Algebra 2

Mrs. DeFilippo and Mrs. Othman

Period 6 - 12:23 - 1:06

Welcome

Welcome to Algebra 2! Mrs. DeFilippo and Mrs. Othman, are excited to introduce myself as this year’s Algebra 2 teacher. I look forward to working with you and your child as your son/daughter continues with the Common Core Math curriculum. The 2020-2021 school year will be unique in many ways. I hope that we can work together to make it a success.

About this Course

The course starts by providing a general overview of different families of functions so students can identify the key features that distinguish different families of functions in a variety of representations and then determine in which situations a given family is best for modeling. Each subsequent unit gives students opportunity to develop more depth of knowledge with a thorough understanding of how to use each function family including transformations, finding roots, understanding the effects of restricting domain, range and number sets, inverses, solving for key features including maxima and minima, roots, intercepts and end behavior and how to apply these tools to real life and abstract situations. This course culminates by allowing students to build on this knowledge and have further opportunity for real life application in probability and prediction and statistics and inference from data.

Expectations

It is very important that your child attends class daily, comes prepared and is on time. Students who are not in class are responsible to make up the topics they missed, and this can be very difficult if they are not present for lessons and activities. Please utilize pupilpath.com to stay updated on your student’s progress.

Students are expected to come to class prepared to do well. Part of being prepared is to have pencils and an Algebra-only notebook (preferably with graph paper) ready for use every day. Being prepared also means that your student comes to class well rested, knowledgeable about the material learned on the previous day and with homework completed. Organized notebooks will ensure that your child has the materials needed to study the content covered in class daily.

All lessons for the entire school year will be posted on this website whether you are learning in-person or remotely. Students will have the opportunity to complete all lessons and assignments digitally or on paper. Digital assignments should be completed on Google classroom or turned in on paper in class.

Homework is given EVERY NIGHT! Studies have shown that Mathematics homework has a deep impact on student performance. Students who do not complete the homework on time are missing a valuable part of the learning experience. 5 points will be given to an assignment completed on time. Assignments turned in one day late will be given half credit. Assignments turned in more than 1 day late will be given zero points.

A tentative outline of this year’s topics and sequence is provided below. More specific information, including the standards covered through each unit, is available electronically. Please contact me with any questions.

A student’s final grade for the semester is an average of their 3 marking period grades. If a student earns a higher score on the Regents exam than they did in one of the 3 marking periods, I can replace that marking period grade with their Regents score before averaging. If Regents exams are cancelled, this policy does not apply.
