Hawken School Makerspaces & Fab Lab
FABLABS are designed for innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, artists, and individuals, empowering people to move from ideas into production using modern digital equipment. Students will use laser cutters, 3-D printers, vinyl cutters, ShopBot CNC routers, desktop milling machines and other digital and analog tools in order to fabricate and test their design projects. The program is designed to allow students to explore their interests in a variety of fields including graphic design, art, business, computer-assisted design (CAD), physical and natural science, mathematics, and engineering and others.

A FAB 4GOOD project is a project that serves a particular need, request, or challenge for someone in our extended community. Requests can range from open-ended problems in our workspaces to fulfilling design orders for the many branches of Hawken School. These projects are intended for student makers to work collaboratively with the client, and not for them.
More information and an archive of completed projects can be found here(Subpage)
Student makers are asked to “look closely” at objects and systems to fully understand the intricacies, nuances, and details of the project they are about to take on. They are then encouraged to “explore complexities” to understand inner workings, points of view, assumptions, past solutions to inform their design. Students will then “find opportunities” to envision, reframe, prototype and “make” based on the values and needs discovered along the way. (Agency by Design, Project Zero)
