As a young kid I enjoyed going to sprint car races with my grandpa, and ever since I loved cars. So it seemed like a great idea to recreate the thing that captured my imagination the most a sprint car model. I liked the large wings that all the sprint cars had. First I recreated my grandfather's dairy company's logo (middle), and added personal touches using Corel Draw to create a digital design. Then using the laser cutter I cut out the wing making sure my measurements were correct, and the wing looked right in cardboard first.
Next thing I need to do was design the body of car using a special notebook I drew a design on paper and transferred it to a pdf. Using the pdf of the car I used a tracing tool on Corel draw to create an SVG file I could print. I decided to uses the ShopBot a CNN machine to print, carving a 2x4 to form the main body. After milling the 2x4 it was too plain, so I knew I needed to add design to it. Sketching up in one note I design many graphics for the side of the car. Finally settling on a design I was happiest with, making uses of an image combined with unique curves and graphics.
]After drawing the design I needed to recreate in Corel Draw so I could laser cut a deign on the wood. I then Laser cut a separate 1/8 inch sheet with the design to be the side plate of car. The car needed wheels and axles to be able to move. I decided to use a wooden del rod as axles and design my own wheels to 3D print, to the size of the axles.
Finally with the wheels I was almost done. All that was left to do was to design a small from wheel, and print the other objects. Then with all the piece printed and milled I could assemble the car fully.
