One of the issues with embroidery machines is getting the graphics. They only come with a few fonts and a few graphics. You can import into most machines via USB as long as the file is in .pes format. I found a blog post that seems like a quick, workable solution for creating files that are readable by the machines: https://medium.com/@volkerwandering/how-to-create-an-awesome-embroidery-file-with-sewart-f0ff15d30c5c#.xnezgybwi
We currently have software called Designer's Gallery. It's ok, not great. See below section for details.
An alternative program (SewArt) is $75 and it allows you to convert any high contrast file (color or no) into .pes format and then open it up on the embroidery machine. So I think you can design your own graphics, convert them to .pes, and go from there.
Most people buy pre-made graphics off etsy ($1-$4 a piece) or use a site like ibroidery.com (just for Brother customers) that has very detailed graphics (like Disney characters) for purchase at about $6 or $7 per graphic.

Default and Desired Stitches for Sew Art
Fill:
Default is Separation 2 and Length 20
Desirable? The Default Stitch is great for basic designs. It stitches out nicely and you don't usually need to change anything. But please play around and share your results in the group =)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Running Stitch:
Set Height LOW and the Length to HIGH
Default is Height 15 and Length 4
Desirable? Height at 2 (this is actually the separation between stitches, the part that is underneath and you don't see) and Length at 15 or more. The smaller the stitch length the longer it will take to sew out and it could chop up your design.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bean Stitch:
Set Height LOW and the Length to HIGH
Default is Height 15 and Length 4
Desirable? Height at 2 (this is actually the separation between stitches, the part that is underneath and you don't see) and Length at 15 or more. The smaller the stitch length the longer it will take to sew out and it could chop up your design. You will want to increase your stitch length to get a more hand-sewn look. Length set at 35 on vinyl and 45 or so on felt works pretty nicely.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Satin Stitch:
Set Height HIGH and Length to LOW
Default is Height 15 and Length 4
Desirable? Height Set at 25 or more (or less if you are doing something small) and your Length at 2 (The length is actually the separation between the Satin Stitch lines. So a bigger length setting will make your Satin Stitch look like a Zig-Zag instead of a pretty satin finish)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blanket Stitch 1: (This Blanket Stitch goes outward with the stitches)
Set Height HIGH and Length to HIGH
Default is Height 15 and Length 4
Desirable? Height Set at 65 or more (The higher the height the longer the outward stitches will be) and a Length Set at 45 or more (The higher the setting for length the more distance between outward stitches)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blanket Stitch 2: (This Blanket Stitch goes inward with the stitches)
Set Height HIGH and Length to HIGH
Default is Height 15 and Length 4
Desirable? Height Set at 65 or more (The higher the height the longer the inward stitches will be) and a Length Set at 45 or more (The higher the setting for length the more distance between inward stitches)

Our Labs are always set up "make ready," which means we have sewing and embroidery machines out with necessary tools like fabric scissors, extra needles, thread, and fabric scraps kept right at the station. These are red dot tools, because very sewing machine is unique and requires a bit of orientation before jumping in. When working in our Lab spaces with students, we are a fan of the Singer Heavy Duty sewing machines, which hold up pretty well to our wear and tear.
