Day 1
We began by going on the ShopBot website where we found the instructions to make the stool above. We found the ShopBot file with the individual stool layouts and used it on the design computer. We have to scale it down to 0.125 in thickness for a smaller cardboard or wood.
Day 2
We had to use the VCarve ShopBot program to shrink down the model of the stool. We shrunk it down to a small prototype with the material thickness of 0.125 inches.
Day 3
After scaling the model of the stool down to .125 inch thickness, we went on to making the model back to full size, .75 inch thickness. We used the Shopbot 3 program on the design computer to make each individual piece of the diagram from day two the specific size, thickness, and and style to be cut out. We had to make the drill holes, pockets, and insides and outsides of each piece. After making the cuts 0.75 inches and drill holes and pockets .125 inches, we set up the ShopBot machine in the Fab Lab to air cut out the two pieces we cut first. The air cut is essentially the same thing as the normal cut, but the Z-axis is set to 2 inches above the wood, so it only maps out the piece instead of cutting it. We then cut out the pieces, but we used the wrong drill, so instead of it drilling in, it drilled up and pulled all the wood up causing the mess with all the scraps seen in the picture.
Day 4
On day 4, we finished cutting out the base pieces of the stool in the large ShopBot in the Woodshop. After cutting them and sanding all the pieces, we were able to put the stool together. It worked except for that the ShopBot cut out the pockets entirely instead of only making them pockets. We have to cut out another top piece.
Day 5
On the last day, we had to cut out the top piece of the stool again because we cut out the slots instead of making them pockets. We had to go back to the wood shop area to get another piece that would fit the dimensions for us to cut it out. After we put the piece in our ShopBot and cut out the top piece, we sanded it and drilled it into the bottom piece. By drilling it, it would not come out and we can now sit on the stool.
