2023 PROJECT LIST
SLIDE DECK
A FAB4Good project is a need, request, or challenge for a potential client or space. Be sure to do your research and iterations to get it exactly right, not just good enough. These projects are intended for student makers to work collaboratively with the client, and not for them.
It's not enough to just make something. Rather, it's our responsibility to encourage and empower our students to Make Something that Makes a Difference (L. Yakonna (Scarsdale)
We will follow a Human-Centered Design Process to gain a deeper understanding of the project, it's scope, feasibility, and impact.
Student makers are asked to “look closely” at objects and systems to fully understand the intricacies, nuances, and details of the project they are about to take on. They are then encouraged to “explore complexities” to understand inner workings, points of view, assumptions, past solutions to inform their design. Students will then “find opportunities” to envision, reframe, prototype and “make” based on the values and needs discovered along the way. (Agency by Design, Project Zero)
Reflection
What would move you forward? faster?
What do you need to figure out, learn, and spend some extra time on?
What do you need? Supplies, information, feedback?
Did you address the ultimate need?
Do you understand your client(s) need(s)?
Have you done your documentation?
FAB 4 GOOD Design Project
DESIGN PROCESS - Demonstrate an understanding of the Design Process by documenting your work in appropriate ways to tell a story of growth, feedback, iteration, experimentation, and presentation. Ex: Sketching, Rapid Prototyping, Feedback, Empathy, Iteration
DIGITAL FABRICATION: Utilize a digital fabrication tool and technique in the Fab Lab, in such a way that shows a deeper level of mastery and experimentation.
DOCUMENTATION - Capture and curate your prototyping journey through images, reflections, and documentation. You will be expected to generate two platforms to showcase your work. (See information later in this document)
Project Presentation SlideShow (Google) - For zooming out and presentation
Progress Blog Post - For documenting the process and learning throughout
Final Project Post and Presentation - Mid and End of project/semester
Step 1 - Brainstorm - Identify a need in our community that you can address through the tools and technology available in the Fab Lab and the skills and talents you have as an individual. In Phase 1 - Brainstorming you should identify a project that you think you can handle based on feasibility, expertise, materials, and ultimately time. You can decide on a project from the following options below. Each option does require an initial concept conversation with Mr. DiGiorgio (Phase 1, part 2).
a. Choose a project based on FabLab Requests that have been made. See list and links below
b. Talk with teachers, students, faculty and other members of our community to identify needs or problems that can be addressed with this project. Prepare with some questions and give people time to think.
C. Talk with Mr. DiGiorgio about a potential project you have in mind. How does it apply what you have already learned in the FabLab space and how can it help others?
✱This should occur with sketches and screen grabs from your research
Step 2 - Conceptualize the Idea - You should prepare a Concept Slide that shows the time, thought and energy you have to see this project through. In other words, convince me you can do this by preparing a document that shows some initial ideas, sketches, and photos to examples of similar work, instructions or tutorials you will follow, and a potential plan you will follow. Prepare visual pitch for Mr. DiGiorgio. The document created from this phase will be the first step towards documenting this entire process.
✱This is the first slide you have already created and presented to Mr. DiGiorgio. Copy and paste it into your new Project Presentation Slideshow (See below)
Step 3 - Documentation & Capturing Creativity - The entire process will be captured and published online via our Fab 4 Good Blog. Review the Fab Academy website for examples of how students document their final projects. You will be asked to keep a running blog post that documents your work with sketches, photos, videos, file uploads, and reflection. You will be asked to generate parts lists, next steps, and identify challenges and success. You will be ultimately graded through this web posting.
Project Presentation Slideshow
Embed [Insert] a Google Presentation at the top of your project blog post page above the progress table.
You may make a copy of this template to get you started.
Project Presentation Slideshow Template.
Save the file in the Google Drive folder for your class.
Be sure to SHARE the presentation so that anyone with the link can view.
PROGRESS Blog POSTS
This consists of a table with two columns that you just keep adding on so that the most recent work is at the bottom. [Table] Insert Row Below
The column on the left should be a daily Progress Post and reflection of the progress you are making, successes, challenges, discoveries you made, and wonders you may have.
The column on the right is to archive the process with photos, images, sketches, links, screen captures, etc.

Mid & FINAL: Project Post and Presentation
For the final Presentation and Post you should complete the following at the top of the blog:
Presentation Cover Slide - this is the first thing that viewers will see when they click on your blog post.
your name and designed logo
the name of your project
photo/render/sketch of your project
a brief description of what your project is/does
To get ideas for presentation slide layout visit:http://fabacademy.org/archives/2014/students/index.html
(2) Final Reflection POST - For the final post, you should summarize your project from start to finish. This is basically the abstract for your project and should be polished as it will be the first, and perhaps the only thing the viewers will read. Think, reflect, and make this meaningful.
What were your initial ideas and thoughts for the project?
Based on your initial ideas, what direction did you go in and why?
What do you learn along the way? (What are you good at, something new, something simple, tool, skill, technique, terminology)
Acknowledge work done by others, resources, tutorials, feedback, etc.
What did you wish you would have done differently at the beginning of the project?
What are you most proud of?
***Attach (at the bottom) all of your design files (Inkscape, Corel Draw, PDF, STL)
