Final Write-up:
In design class I think that I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge that I will be able to use throughout my time at Hawken, but will also be applicable once I leave. I have obviously gained knowledge on how to use around 5 different machines, all of which could be helpful down the road. However, I have also honed some other skills such as problem solving, refining my ideas by seeing what's wrong with them then improving them, and creating original ideas and designs. Before I came to this class I was more worried about efficiency when completing my projects even if that meant that there were more flaws in my work, however, after this class I have realized that taking the time to perfect the work I have done makes it look much better and much more rewarding. I also used to not be as creative when coming up with ideas, however, I now have found ways to formulate interesting and creative ideas for my projects. Things I would change if I took this class again is, I would try to be a bit more focused, because if I did, then I maybe could have had 1-2 extra classes of work time. I would also spend more time on my final project, so that I could perfect it rather than my final being 90% perfect but not the best I could make it. One of the things that I really enjoyed about was the environment, it was really free and open without constraints so that I could work at my own pace on whatever I wanted to. Everyone was focused and it was enjoyable creating things and seeing what others could create with the resources that we had. I also really enjoyed getting to learn how to use the machines as I think that they could become super useful next time I need to create something for a project or something like that. Some of the more challenging parts of the class were trying to create ideas that were original and interesting as I sometimes just work really blandly. I also had a lot of trouble with some of my projects taking my mistakes from earlier drafts and improving them as I went on through the steps. My most proud moment in the class was for sure finishing my final lamp project as I had learned about so many new things in the FabLab while working on it, and had spent 3 hours that morning trying to finish it. It was really rewarding to rap it up and was super enjoyable as well. Overall, I am really glad I took this class and really appreciated the opportunity to use all of the different machines to create cool things as well as learn more valuable skills for the future. For my design, I made the first letters of my name, with the L being backwards, then put the rest of my name inside. The design is meant to represent my creativity as it is blocky, although it also looks quite structured and official, just like me.
This is my first logo on wood. I think that it turned out as well as I wanted it to, except that the piece of wood that I chose had a cut, so there is a chip in the bottom center of the piece. I think that etching was the way to go for this design as it highlights the things that I wanted to be highlighted when doing this project. While doing this project I got my first experience using the laser cutter. I got to learn how to use the settings and how to make a design that work.
These were the very first thing that I made in this class. They were not very good as i let glue show on the outside of the box, and it in the end was not exactly the dimensions it was supposed to be. By doing this exercise i was able to get my first experience for when we have to do models of lesser material.
This was the second model I made for class which has different types of shapes that you can make with cardboard. For this I was a bit sloppy and rushed. However, I learned how to make these different cardboard designs.
This picture has shows all the practice that I have done on TinkerCad. I completed all the work through the sunglasses. By doing these exercises, I learned how to use all of the different features on the website.
This was the design of my 3d printed logo. I think it turned out looking pretty good as i had to use all of the different features that I learned to make the levels even and neat. I will start printing it later this class.
This is my first 3D print that i made in class on TinkerCad. I first made it on the broken 3D printer, but it did not work so I had to use the new one. After printing this I realized that the fonts were a little to different, so that is something I need to change. The measurements and blocks look good. There are also a few minor printing mistakes. However, for my first attempt I think it looks good, and it was pretty fun.
This was the first sticker I made using the vinyl cutter . It was pretty difficult to cut because I had some small features, and when I took of the border it accidentally tore, so I just didn't use it. It also made it are to paste down because a lot of it isnt connected. From making this design I learned how to use the vinyl cutter, and i learned that to make a better sticker, I should probably try to have more connected pieces.
This is my name stand that I created using the laser cutter. Its pretty basic I just made a cool design I wanted on the top. I just used the letter tool to make my name. I had to do some careful measurements to make sure the slots of my name piece would fit in the base slots. I does not stand up entirely even though I did the right dimensions. By doing this I learned how to do some slightly more complicated measurements on Adobe Illustrator. Next time I might need to make the slots a bit tighter so that it stands up all the way.
This was my original glasses design that I drew as well as the model I made out of card stock. I also started my model on illustrator. Also below you can see my designs for how I want the glasses to work. Next class i will work on making slots for the back parts of the glasses to fit into the main part. For next time I am making a cardboard model I will try to make it a bit more like the model I am trying to make, and I will try to make them a bit cleaner cut so I can base my digital model of them more.
I progressed from my card stock pair of glasses to my 2nd stage, the cardboard pair. The glasses when cut out were pretty flimsy because they are thin, but I think it will work itself out when I use wood. The part I need to work on for my final pair is having the piece that sticks into the slots in the glasses be longer because it was too short and wouldn't always stay in. I also need to change the dimensions a bit on the back sticks. By doing this I became more knowledgeable on how to use the laser cutter as well as working and editing my AdobeIllustrator design to make it better.
After making the necessary edits to my cardboard glasses, I have come up with these. I am pretty pleased with how they look although it was hard to make the 100% exact design that I was looking to make. The connectable pieces fit together quite well now due to my edits. They also fit my head pretty well (see below). I am quite pleased with how these glasses turned out, and I got to learn more about the stages of creating a product as well as editing it on Adobe then using the cutter to make it happen.
My glasses fit pretty well as you can see!
I have now learned how to make a glow circuit, so I will start doing that next class.
This is my first attempt at a design for my glow circuit, I am trying to make it so that my letter F glows through the top, however, the 3d-printer put a top on the cylinder, so I could not get the glow circuit on.
These are my preliminary designs for my lamp which I have decided is going to be final project because I want to make my lamp super cool and complex. I decided to make a design sort of similar to the 2nd one in the 2nd row.
