To begin our final project, we were given several options to explore as well as the liberty to propose our own ideas. Among the given were a time capsule box, stools, "reminder" charms, a book lantern, telescope, FAB jewelry, a robot chicken, display case, and a planter, which I selected.
I made 10 original sketches that I made before deciding on my final design:
The first sketch was an attempt at incorporating kerf bending like I had used with my other project - a phone stand.
Secondly, I had seen many aesthetically pleasing geometric shapes online that had been painted different colors and looked great.
Additionally, I used the topic that I had been learning in my math class at the time to apply to art. In my Geometry H class, we had been studying fractals and where they appear in every day life, and I thought it would be a fun design.
The first day, I wasn't sure of how to go about making a planter, and I had imagined crafting one using wood, so these pictures were some of my original ideas:
When Mr. D suggested I make a mold and fill it with plaster, I searched what some designs that had already been created using that idea looked like. There were simple ones such as these:
And there were more complicated projects, such as these:
However, knowing that our projects have a certain limit on the amount of wood we are able to use, I began searching for alternatives on Google. Most of the images that appeared were of either extremely complex or simple designs.
Eventually, I came across a method to make a planter without using wood that happened to be like the second idea I had envisioned in my sketches. It was a cardboard cut-out made of triangles that could be folded into a geometric shape.
