論文が投稿され、査読を経て出版・公開されるまでには一定の費用がかかります。従来は購読者が料金を支払うことでこれらの費用を負担していましたが、OAを実現するには、購読者にかわり論文出版に関わる他の人々や機関が費用を負担する必要があります。
最初期にOAを定義した2002年のブダペスト宣言（BOAI: Budapest Open Access Initiative）では、OAを実現するためのモデルとして、2つの方法が示されました。第1の方法はセルフアーカイブによって実現する方法、第2の方法は学術雑誌自体をインターネット経由で誰もが無料で読めるようにする方法です。それぞれの方式は、グリーンOA、ゴールドOAと呼ばれます。
グリーンOA
グリーンOA は、著者自らが自身のウェブサイトやリポジトリと呼ばれるインターネット上の電子アーカイブに自著論文を掲載する「セルフアーカイブ」によってOAを実現する方式です。有料の購読誌に掲載された論文であっても、公開できる版や時期に一定の制約を設けた上で、著者がリポジトリ等で公開することを出版社が認めている場合が多く見られます。この方式はAPC（Article Processing Charge：オープンアクセス掲載公開料）をはじめとする著者の費用負担がなく、無料で論文をOAにできるという利点があります。グリーンOAの詳細は【実践編】2. グリーンOAをご参照ください。
ゴールド OA
ゴールドOAは、学術雑誌上で論文等をOAで出版する方法です。出版にかかる費用は、学会や大学等の助成金によって負担する場合や、著者が費用を負担する場合があります。現状は、著者が出版社に対してAPCを支払うモデルが主流となっています。ゴールドOAの詳細は【実践編】3. ゴールドOAをご参照ください。

The process of article submission, peer review, and publication incurs certain costs that have been traditionally covered by the fees paid by readers. To achieve open access, however, those costs need to be covered not by readers but by research institutions and other parties involved in article publication.
The 2022 BOAI (Budapest Open Access Initiative), which offered the earliest definition of OA, proposed two open access methods: (1) self-archiving and (2) making journals themselves open-access journals that grant free and open online access. These methods are called Green OA and Gold OA respectively.
Green OA
With the Green OA method, the author ‘self-archives’ their articles on their own website or in open electronic archives called repositories to enable OA. In many cases, publishers permit authors to make their articles available in repositories, etc., even when those articles appear in subscription-based journals, subject to certain constraints in terms of the version and the timing. The advantage of this method is that authors can grant open access to their articles without having to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) and other costs. See 2. Green OA for further details.
Gold OA
Gold OA entails publishing articles and other research outputs in academic journals on an OA basis. Publishing costs are covered either by subsidies from academic societies and universities, etc., or by the author. Standard practice at present is for the author to pay an APC to the publisher.
