The Scots took first in the Mt. Hood Conference Championships at Sandy High School on Feb 18-19.

Of the 22 David Douglas wrestlers competed, 19 made their way onto the podium and 11 qualified for the state tournament by placing in the top three. Five wrestlers claimed first place: 120 pound Junior Eldar Muzaffarov, 138 pound senior Mark Hull, 152 pound junior Ramazan Tyuranov, 170 pound junior Anthony Linares, and 220 pound junior Steven Ramos. Three Scots claimed second place: 113 pound sophomore Yestin Narruhn, 138 pound junior Erick Klimyuk, and 160 pound senior Jaden Poulshock. Three Scots placed third: 113 pound senior Timur Muzaffarov, 145 pound junior Mychal Winchester, and 152 pound sophomore Hung Le. All of these wrestlers qualified for the state tournament. There were eight other David Douglas wrestlers who placed, but didn’t qualify for state, including 182 pound senior Melvin Villanueva, 120 pound sophomore Paiten Gannon, 126 pound sophomore Troy Hockett, 160 pound sophomore Long Le, and 285 pound sophomore AJ Wedge, 106 pound freshman Kevin Le, 126 pound junior Reese Montgomery, and 132 pound sophomore Alexander Shoemaker.

Of the 11 wrestlers who competed at the state tournament, three placed, including 120 pound junior Eldar Muzzafarov who placed 6th, 170 pound junior Anthony Linares who placed 4th, and 220 pound junior Steven Ramos who also placed 4th.

The Scots finished 6th overall out of the 50 teams who competed.

“I feel like as a team we had an amazing year, but as always there are a couple of individual wrestlers that probably did not end the season with the outcome they expected,” said coach Anthony Weerheim. “This happens every year to so many athletes across the state when it comes to wrestling. This is an extremely tough sport to make it to the state tournament and earn a spot on the podium, finishing in the top six. The District tournament we wrestled excellent as a team and punched 11 kids into the state tournament, and earning the district championship once again felt good. At state, I feel like we really wrestled super solid as a team. To be quite honest, I did not really care about looking at team scores as the tournament went on. Our goal was to finish back inside the top 10 and get some wrestlers back on the podium. We did both and kind of shocked ourselves placing sixth. Again, as always, we had a few guys on the team that probably could have done better in their respected weight classes, but that's how it goes sometimes at the state tournament. I am super proud of this group and we look forward to continuing our mission toward bringing DDHS another state championship.”
