Boys' basketball posts its first home win

Consistently strong defense paired with bursts of overpowering offense allowed the boys’ basketball team to win its first home game against the Sunset Apollos, 63-43, on Dec. 10.

The first period started with a Sunset lay-up which was quickly followed by a jump shot by 6-foot guard Josiah Collins, tying the score 2-2. Josiah Collins made another jump shot followed by 4 free throws due to back-to-back penalties, giving the Scots the 8-4 lead. A rebound was made by a Sunset player. Then 6-foot-4 forward Drew Satterthwaite made one free throw, which was followed by the first 3-pointer of the game by 6-foot-3 wing David Alderton, making the score 12-6. The period ended 19-8 with a Sunset lay-up..

The second period once again started with a Sunset lay-up , followed by two lay-ups by 6-foot-3 forward Jay’Vanni Sarchi, making the score 23-10 within the first minute. Sunset earned 4 points due to two penalty shots. Alderton and 6-foot-2 forward Jamaree Collins then made back-to-back rebounds off each other, bringing the score to 27-14. Five-foot-9 guard Carlens Ostin made a bank shot, then Josiah Collins made a lay-up. The last Scots’ basket was a 3-pointer made by Jamaree Collins. Sunset made the last points of the period leaving the score 37-21.A Sunset jump shot started the third quarter. Josiah Collins then made 3 back-to-back lay-ups, bringing the score to 39-23 within the first 2 minutes.

Sunset made its first 3-pointer of the game. Sarchi made two free throws directly after this, and then made a lay-up, bringing the score to 51-27, David Douglas. Sunset made 2 rebound shots but also fouled Satterthwaite, who then made a free throw. The period ended with a Sunset 3-pointer, the score was 54-33.

The last period started with a Sunset rebound. Josiah Collins made two lay-ups bringing the score to 58-35. Sunset made another rebound. Five-foot-7 guard Jahmeir Bass then scored a lay-up, giving the Scots a 23 point lead with a score of 60-37. The last Douglas point was made by 5-foot-8 wing Alex Chubare, his 3-pointer put the score at 63-39. The last two baskets of the game were made by Sunset. The final score was 63-43 with the Scots winning by 20 points.

“I thought we really stuck to a defensive game plan and took them out of what they wanted to do,” said coach Chad Reeves. “Josiah Collins had a great game. He disrupted what they were trying to do on offense, and he did a nice job of setting the tone for our offense. He really kept Sunset off balance by going to the hoop when it was open and getting the ball to his teammates when they were open.”
