Girls' basketball comes up just short, 49-43, against Rams on Senior Night

The girls' basketball team lost 49-43 on Feb. 18 due to being out-shot by the Central Catholic Rams during Senior Night, the last home game of the season.

The first quarter started off with two Central Catholic baskets. The first Scot’s basket was a lay-up made by senior 5-foot-2 guard Lanaya Baxter. The Scots took the lead, 5-4, after a 3-pointer by senior 5-foot-3 guard Esther Alvarez. Central Catholic then made four baskets pushing them into a 5-12 lead. David Douglas called a time out with 4:50 left in the quarter. The time-out was followed by a jump shot from senior 5-foot-8 forward Brooklyn Collins. Baxter, after a drive, made a lay-up bringing the score to 9-12. Central Catholic followed this with another lay-up. Alvarez made a lay-up which was imminently followed by a free throw from senior 6-foot-2 center Awek Depiok, these baskets brought the score to a two-point difference of 12-14. Central Catholic made a 3-pointer. With 13.9 seconds left in the quarter, a Central Catholic free throw brought the score to 12-19.

Within the first 37 seconds of the second quarter, Alverez made a lay-up. Central Catholic then made six uninterrupted baskets including three free throws, two rebounds, and one lay-up making the score 14-28. David Douglas called a time out with 4:06 left in the quarter. Senior 5-foot-8 forward Mellian Asmlash made a free throw. Central Catholic then made two free throws, the score being 15-31. Alvarez then made a free throw followed by another free throw from Asmlah. The last Douglas basket was a 3-pointer from junior 5-foot-2 guard Aysiah Clinton. The quarter ended with a Central Catholic lay-up and with Central Catholic in an 11 point lead, 22-33.

Senior 5-foot-8 forward Tori Somsanith made a jump shot in the frist 15 seconds of the third quarter. Central Catholic then made two free throws, 24-16. Senior 5-foot-2 guard Dianey Lopez made a rebound followed by a lay-up from Asmlash. Central Catholic made a lay-up. Baxter then made a free throw Depiok then made a lay-up, the score was 31-38. Central Catholic’s last basket of the quarter was a jump shot. The last Scots basket was a free throw from Asmlash.

The last quarter started with a Central Catholic lay-up. Asmlash then made back-to-back jump shots. Central Catholic made a 3-pointer, Central Catholic was in an eight-point lead of 37-45. Depiok made a free throw and a lay-up. Asmelash made a lay-up with 1:46 left which was directly followed by Central Catholic time out, the score was 43-45. Central Catholic made a free throw with 18.1 seconds left and then called another time out. The last basket of the game was a Central Catholic free throw with 3.3 seconds left, the final score was 43-49.

“They made more shots than us,” said coach Heather Marshall. “That’s why we lost.”
