So many questions have remained unanswered this past year, and one still remains— Is The Kilt Eatery still operating during to Covid protocols?

The school shut down and so did the spots where students used to eat lunch. Dee’s Corner Cafe, next to the north office, closed when the school shut down in the beginning of the pandemic. So did The Kilt Eatery, another popular destination at lunch time, located in room 238, across from the south cafeteria. Currently, The Kilt Eatery is not open, but is planning to open on Nov. 4 for the first time since the pandemic. It will only be serving early lunches on most Thursdays.

Students used to go into The Kilt, sit with friends and purchase impressive meals. Because of new regulations, there is no accommodation for dine-in. Instead, The Kilt will only take to-go orders. Faculty can place orders ahead of time, but students must come to the door to place their orders. The Kilt will take cash and cards from students and faculty, but checks from faculty only.

The Kilt Eatery has already started preparing meals, including Dinners-To-Go freezer meals. The meals come in eight different varieties and serve four customers each. These meals will be sold to district staff at the end of October.

Culinary Arts I and II classes prepare all Kilt meals, under the direction and supervision of culinary teachers Janet Costello and Whitney Harvey. The class is self-run by the students, other than purchasing supplies. Students have prepared stir fry, lasagna, enchiladas, cookies, egg frittatas, soup, and spaghetti.

Both Culinary Arts I and II students will start on the Baking 101 college-level curriculum, and have the opportunity to earn four college credits through Central Oregon Community College’s culinary program.

"Our students plan out each week's menu, execute it in the kitchen, and serve it to our customers,” said Harvey. “This is a hundred percent student-run with a little help from their teachers. Our students rock.
