The dark gloomy landscape is the backdrop to the lone figure skater. The sense of movement is suggested with the use of sgraffito techniques in the oil paint on the stretched canvas expressing cuts in the ice where the skater had skated. The repetition of the skater’s arms expresses the flowing choreography associated with the art of ice skating.
