Turkey, Türkiye

Specifically for maps only, National Geographic has adopted the new spelling of Türkiye in place of the previous conventional spelling of Turkey. The government of Türkiye made a request to the United Nations in May of 2022 for the change, including for use in English, and the UN adopted the change. We will include “Turkey” in parentheses after “Türkiye” on maps when there is room for the additional label. Note that there is an umlaut for the “u” for both lower (ü) and uppercase (Ü) and also a dotted “i,” which requires no change to the lowercase “i” but does require the dot over the uppercase “İ”.

In article texts, however, in most cases we will continue to use the Turkey spelling.
