SIGNS

Signs use quotation marks and may be written with initial caps or capped as appropriate:

"Turn off the lights before leaving the room."

Short signs, however, may omit quotation marks or appear in small caps without quotation marks:

            The sign warned No Swimming

            the sign warned NO SWIMMING

A foreign phrase is italic; the translation is roman. Capitalize the translation as appropriate; long signs need not carry all initial caps:

            "Rauchen Verboten—No Smoking."

"Cave Canem, Beware of the Dog."

Near a Marxist sign, "Feja është opium per popullin—Religion is the opium of the people."
