HAWAIIAN TERMS

Except for well-known terms such as poi and aloha, italicize Hawaiian words and use glottal stops: ali`i.

Note that the glottal stop is an opening single quotation mark (shaped like a 6 in many fonts), not a closing single quotation mark (shaped like a 9).

The plural form of Hawaiian words is the same as the singular. In general, NGM does not use glottal stops in Hawaiian place-names, although they may be used in articles about Hawaiian culture or peoples.
