POETRY

Titles of short poems are roman and within quotation marks.  Titles of long poems and epics are italic without quotation marks:

            "Daffodils"                          Hiawatha

"Crossing the Bar"          Dante's Divine Comedy

When citing three or more lines of poetry, generally indent and use italic without quotation marks.  Shorter fragments are usually set in roman, enclosed within quotation marks, and run in with the text. Although slash marks are best avoided, they may be used to indicate line breaks; a space should be placed on either side of the slash mark. Retain punctuation and capitalization of original.

For omissions, see: Ellipsis.
