Camouflage. A mimic can take the shape of any inanimate object made of primarily stone or wood (small bits of what appears to be dark metal can be incorporated such as hinges, handles, or locks). The camouflage is perfect and grants automatic surprise unless a creature has special senses.
Glue (Grab). A mimic that does damage to a creature with a pseudopod will automatically grapple it and it cannot break free unless the glue is dissolved. The mimic will not have the grappled condition. "Small" mimics can grapple up to two Man-sized humanoids. Killer mimics can grapple up to four Man-sized humanoids (half number if large, per the GM, and double if small). The glue dissolves 5 rounds after the death of a mimic or by an application of strong alcohol (16 ounces per man-sized creature) will release the one doused in one round and they cannot become stuck again until the alcohol dries. A mimic can release a stuck victim as a free action. Objects that strike the mimic are not stuck, the glue only forms on a pseudopod.
Mimics are thought to be the result of an alchemist’s attempt to grant life to an inanimate object through the application of an eldritch reagent, the recipe for which is long lost. Over time, these strange but clever creatures have learned the ability to transform themselves into simulacra of man-made objects, particularly in locations that have infrequent traffic by small numbers of creatures, thus increasing their odds of successfully attacking their victims.
Though mimics are not inherently evil, some sages believe that mimics attack humans and other intelligent creatures for sport rather than merely for sustenance. The desire to completely fool others is thought to be a part of their being, and their surprise attacks against others are a culmination of those desires.
A typical small mimic has a volume of 150 cubic feet (5 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet) and weighs about 900 pounds. Legends and tales speak of mimics of much greater sizes, with the ability to assume the form of houses, ships, or entire dungeon complexes that they festoon with treasure (both real and false) to lure unsuspecting food within.
