SAMUEL LEE SR. (1928-1994)
Samuel "Sammy" Lee Sr., a retired General Motors employee and member of the Old Timers Soccer Hall of Fame, died Monday. He was 66 and lived in Northeast Philadelphia.
Lee retired from the General Motors' Corp.'s Bensalem facility after 38 years with the company. When he retired in January, he was a benefits representative. For much of his life, Lee played, coached and promoted the sport of soccer. His son, Samuel Jr., is soccer coach at St. Joseph's University.
Lee, who grew up in Kensington, began playing soccer at the Lighthouse Boys Club in Kensington and in the 1960s, was one of the prime organizers of soccer teams for the Parkwood Youth Organization in the Far Northeast. Lee also helped build the soccer fields for the youth organization.
He was a graduate of Northeast High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors also include his wife of 36 years, the former Barbara Turner; another son, Robert Lee; two daughters, Anne Marie Lee and Linda Bardowski; a brother, Robert; a sister, Alice Bates; and four grandchildren.
