Tim O’Neill was a three year varsity player at North. During this time, O’Neill was a two time 1st team All-Catholic and a two-time Catholic League MVP in both 1998 & 1999. In 1999, he also led the Falcons to a Catholic League Championship by scoring the game winner in overtime on a long run through the Ryan defense to give the Falcons a 3-2 victory. After his senior season Tim O’Neill was also named the Philadelphia Inquirer’s “Player of the Year” and was voted a NSCAA High School All-American.
In College O’Neill went on to be a four year starter, first at Rider U (freshman) and then at St. John’s U. As a sophomore in 2001 he played in the NCAA Cup for St John’s. As a senior he played in the NCAA Championship finals match in 2003; assisting on the Redmen’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Indiana U. He logged the most minutes of any player as a senior and tallied one goal and 2 assists from his midfield position.
O’Neill began his professional soccer career in 2000 with the South Jersey Barons. He then played for the Syracuse Salty Dogs and in 2004 was part of the team that reached the A-League Eastern Conference final. O’Neill then played for the USL First Division side Virginia Beach Mariners. In the 2005 season, he made 27 appearances for the Mariners, scoring one goal. He continued to play for the franchise through the 2006 campaign, playing 22 more games. Most recently, he played Major Indoor Soccer for the Philadelphia Kixx in 2005-06 and the New Jersey Ironmen in the 2007–08 seasons. He received a tryout with the newly formed Philadelphia Union of MSL in 2009 before retiring professionally.
Tim is currently the youngest member of the NC Soccer Hall of Fame. He was selected in his very 1st year of eligibility. Tim O’Neill currently resides in Port Richmond & is also a professional musician.
