John Friskey hails from the Kensington section of Philadelphia. He attended Ascension grade school before entering North in 1975. As a youth of about 10 John concentrated on football and baseball until he missed weight for a youth football game. Walking home that day he met a neighbor playing soccer for Kensington Ramblers Soccer Club. He traded in his football cleats for soccer cleats that day and never looked back.
Friskey went on to North Catholic where he was initially a goal scoring striker. But as the team needed help on defense due to injury, John switched positions and became a major cog in the Falcons defensive back line as they won they won back to back PCL and City Championships in 1977 & 1978. He was named All-Catholic and All-Scholastic at sweeper after his senior campaign.
John went on to an outstanding College Career at LaSalle University where he was a four year player (1979-82) under legendary head soccer coach Bill Wilkinson. Friskey joined forces with fellow Falcon stars Bob Matthews, Rusty Bono, Jim Hooven and Chris Mullen to help the Explorers win the ECC title in both 1979 and 1982. Friskey was a 3 time ECC All-Star player while at LaSalle (80, 81 & 82) and a Philadelphia Soccer 7 All-Star twice (1981 & 82).
Friskey is currently 2nd all-time in LaSalle Soccer history for assists in a season with 10 in 1982. John graduated from LaSalle U with an Accounting degree in 1983. John’s son Robert also played for the LaSalle U soccer team. The Friskey’s live in King of Prussia PA.
