EDWARD “MICHAEL” FLANAGAN
Mike Flanagan was a 2 year Varsity player while at North. Flanagan hails from Visitation parish in Kensington where he also played soccer for Lighthouse Boys Club as a youth. He was a member of the 1965 & 1966 Falcon squads that won the PCL Championship. Flanagan was named 1st team All-Catholic, All-City and All-Scholastic after the 1966 season. The 1966 team was one of the most talented teams to ever play at North going undefeated (12-0-0) in the regular season while outscoring their opponents 84-4. Their only loss that year was versus Dobbins High for the City title by a score of 3-1.
At the club level, Michael Flanagan played on the Lighthouse 49ers team that won the 1967 National Junior Cup. Mike was also a top student in his Class at North and a Class Officer.
Upon graduation in 1967 Mike went on to the US Naval Academy where the talented freshman paced the Navy Plebes in scoring with 19 goals. He then led the Varsity team in points during his sophomore season in 1968 with 28 (8 goals & 12 assists). He also tied for the team lead in goals with 8 alongside All-American teammate Walter “Casey” Bahr. The team went 8-2-1 that season.
Unfortunately Flanagan was injured after the 1968 season. This is from the Navy Soccer media guide for 1969: “A severe jolt to the forward line was the off-season injury to scoring leader Mike Flanagan (8 goals), who was hurt during the winter intramural program. Hospitalized for three months with his leg in a cast, Flanagan's chances of playing this fall are considered by Coach Warner to be "remote" at best. "Without Flanagan, our attack is in real trouble" -- said head coach Glenn Warner.
Mike Flanagan never played soccer for Navy again but he did become an assistant coach there. He also went on to serve his country in Vietnam where he was deployed on a destroyer in the South China Sea. After his war service Mike Flanagan went on to become an attorney practicing in Washington DC. For his accomplishments as player and a coach Mike Flanagan was elected into the US Naval Academy Athletic Hall of Fame.
