where or what ?

当たり前のことですが、日本語と英語は構造が異なるため、日本語の思考で意味をなすものでも英語で通じるとは限りません（その逆の場合も同じ“vice versa”ですが）。２年生のテストの問題の中にその典型的なものがあったので紹介したいと思います。

Where is the most beautiful place in Ehime?

解答例 Nametoko is.

この英文は当然「愛媛で一番美しい場所はどこですか」という意味のつもりなのですが、この英文で“Where”を使うのは実は正しくありません。落ち着いて考えてみましょう。“Where”というのは、位置や所在を尋ねるときに使われるものです。ところが問題の文は「愛媛で一番美しい場所は、何というところか」という意味なので、“What is the most beautiful place in Ehime?” が正しい英文になります。そして、このように“What”を使ってはじめて解答例の答えである “Nametoko is.” が生きてきます。

What is the most beautiful place in Ehime?

Nametoko is (the most beautiful place in Ehime).

この問題の文のように “Where” を使って質問した場合、答は“In Nametoko.”とならなくてはいけません。“Where is he?” に対して “Nametoko is.” と答えるとおかしなことになり、正しくは “In Nametoko.” または “He is in Nametoko.” と答えることを考えていただけると分かると思います。

さて、“What is the most beautiful place in Ehime?” の答え方に違う角度から注目してみましょう。答え方としては、“Nametoko is.”と“It is Nametoko.”の二通りがありえますが、これは基本的に英米の違いからきているものです。イギリスでは、What を主語とし Nametoko is. と答え、アメリカでは、the most beautiful place in Ehime を主語として、代名詞に置き換え、It is Nametoko. と答える傾向があるそうです。

英語表現べからず辞典（中内正夫著）には次のように解説されています。

[Don'ts] Where is the capital of Czechoslovakia?

《Point》日本語では、このような場合、必ず「どこ」というので、それにひかれて、ついつい Where を使ってしまうことがある。しかし、英語で、Where～とすると、「チェコスロバキアの首都はどこにありますか」の意味になってしまって、まったくトンチンカンなものになる。What にしなければならないのである。

さらにこの点について、Merriam-Webster の Emily Brewster さんにも質問をして返事をいただきました。A. What is the most beautiful place in Japan? B. Where is the most beautiful place in Japan? という英文を提示して質問をしてみました。

The question "What is the capital of Japan?" can be answered simply "Tokyo," but the question "Where is the capital of Japan?" asks for more information. It's likely to be answered with something like "Tokyo is on the east coast of the island of Honshu." Neither question is incorrect.

The case of sentences A and B is somewhat different, however, because the object of the sentence, "the most beautiful place," is so open-ended. The word "what" asks the listener or reader to identify a thing; the question "What is the most beautiful place in Japan?" asks for the name of a particular location. It might be answered with the name of a park or mountain, for example. The word "where" asks the listener or reader to describe the location of a thing; the question "Where is the most beautiful place in Japan?" asks where a particular thing--not yet specified--is located. The question is not exactly incorrect, but it is difficult to answer and, therefore, this sentence construction is not commonly used.

If we change the question slightly so that the object is something concrete, the question makes more sense: "Where is the highest mountain in Japan?" can be answered much as the one about Tokyo: "Mount Fuji is in the central part of Honshu."
