「ジョン万次郎」のリーディング教材の中で見つけた次の英文。何か気になりませんか？間違っているということではありません。

Manjiro, now a samurai, went with them as interpreter.

ここでは “as interpreter” に注目してください。「通訳者」という意味で、当然Countable「可算名詞」であるのに、どうして “as an interpreter” ではないのでしょう。理由は、万次郎が「唯一の通訳者」であったことにあります。私が持っている Writer’s Guide to English Composition and Usage は、次のように説明しています。

A Mr. Kato serves as director of research.

B Mr. Kato serves as a director of research.

A and B are both acceptable but have different meanings. A says that there is one director of research; that is, Mr. Kato. B says that Mr. Kato serves as one of the (several) directors of research.

簡単に言うと、director がMr. Kato だけなら、as director of researchで、Mr. Kato 以外にも何人かdirector がいるなら、as a director of researchになるということです。つまり、万次郎も他に通訳をする人がいなくて「唯一の通訳者」であったので、as interpreterであったわけです。

もう少し違う言い方をすると、“a” は「１」という意味もあるのですが、同時に同じ種類のものが他にも存在している、ということもあらわしているのです。逆に、可算名詞でも、“a” がつかない場合は、先ほど説明したようにそれ以外の存在がないことを暗示しています。着任するのが１人である場合、“president” “chairman” などに “a” がつかないのはそのためです。

このような知識があると、英語を「立体的」に読めて面白いのではないでしょうか。
