「たくさんの～」 “a lot of” ≠ “many, much”

あるテストの採点中（中２の問題 読解問題の本文）を見ていると次の文の "a lot" がふと気になりました。

Do you know a lot about Hong Kong?

"a lot (of)" を大きな辞書で調べる人間もあまりいないかと思いますが、次のような解説が見られます。

“a lot of ~” には、「数にも量にも用いるが, 通例疑問文や否定文では用いられず, many, much がこれに代わる」(Bookshelf) という用法があります。一方、“many” や “much” には、「口語では肯定文の主語に用いるか、または too、so、as、 how に続く場合以外には、否定・疑問に用い、肯定には多く “a lot of ~”、 “a (large) number of ~、 “a great [good] many” などを代わりに用いる」（新英和大辞典 研究社）という用法があります。

語法については、よく“通例”という言葉が使われます。この“通例”というのをどのように捉えてよいか分からないことがありますが、この語法によると Do you know much about Hong Kong? が良いと考えられます。昨年まで使っていた教科書（１年）本文に、Did you learn a lot of English? という英文がありましたが、これも上の語法解説によると不適切な英文と考えられます。ある文法書は、「疑問文や否定文で “a lot of ~” を使わないという語法はアメリカよりもイギリスで厳密に守られている」と解説しています。教科書の英文は概ね米語であることを考えると、アメリカ人は、この疑問文や否定文中の “a lot of~” にそれほど違和感を持っていないということかもしれません。しかし、最近読んだ本のなかで、アメリカ人のある著名な日本文学研究者は「日本の大学生は “I have many books.” のどこがおかしいか分かっていない」と嘆いていました。理由は上述の通りです。

ただ、気をつけていただきたいのは、あくまでも「通例」ということです。必ずこうでなければならないと100％言い切れないものが「語法」の中にはあります。このような違いは中学生に教える必要はないとは思いますし、「“a lot of ~” = “many, much”」と生徒に教えるのは良いと思いますが、英語教師としてはこの語法を知っておくべきでしょう。簡単な単語や表現ほど、意外と分かってない語法が潜んでいます。暇を見つけて、辞書の語法欄をぜひチェックしてみてください。

↑この記事を書いたあとに、Online Dictionary でいろいろ調べ続けました。Merriam-Webster Online の Contact us のページから「a lot of は、否定文＆疑問文で使われるのか」という質問をしてみたところ、Merriam-Webster Editorial Department の Editor である Emily Brewster さんという方からメールで回答をいただくことができました（平成14年11月12日）。ご本人の許可を得ることができましたので、そのまま掲載しておきたいと思います。

Although I'm not aware of any preference in English for the use of "many" or "much" rather than "a lot of" in interrogative and negative sentences, the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, like the dictionaries you mention, does report that this is the case. I can tell you, however, that this is not a hard-and-fast rule. In our files, we have a significant amount of evidence of phrases like "not a lot of" and "aren't a lot." Below are some examples of sentences that are perfectly grammatical and idiomatic:


There aren't a lot of people here. There aren't many people here.

There was not a lot of snow last winter. There was not much snow last winter.

Were a lot of people at the show? Were many people at the show?

Did it cost a lot to get in? Did it cost much to get in?


Although you may wish to follow the advice of the dictionaries you've seen and avoid the use of "a lot of" with negative and interrogative sentences, I can assure you that this is a stylistic rather than grammatical matter.
